6 Inspirational Quotes: Reflections on two decades of Freelancing

I’ll celebrate my 20th year as a freelancer in April 2026. My journey began during my second year of college, where I started by writing articles for clients on Odesk and assisting fellow students with their academic papers. I had initially doubted its sustainability, as I was only taking on small jobs and often spending more on internet cafe usage than I was earning. Nevertheless, I persevered and eventually out-survived the traditional employment paths and lack of opportunities.

I’ve compiled a list of 6 motivational quotes that have helped me through my freelancing journey. My goal is to inspire others to persevere through their challenges.

I hope these quotes inspire you to prosper in your freelance journey as much as they have inspired me:

  1. Artistotle’s Work Philosophy
  2. Rohn’s Dare to be Different
  3. Les Brown on Dreams
  4. Henry Ford on the Importance of Self-Belief
  5. Roy Bennett on Values of the Heart

Each quote represents a chapter in my freelance journey, a narrative of growth and discovery that I hope gives you the strength to pursue this risky path.

Artistotle’s Work Philosophy

I begin my list with an beautiful quote from Aristotle, a timeless philosopher whose words resonate deeply with the essence of meaningful work. He believed that everyone has a purpose and that true fulfillment happens when you maximize your intended job on Earth. I love this quote because I find work pleasurable.

Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.

— Aristotle

Aristotle (384-322 BC) was a Greek philosopher and polymath known for his contributions to various fields such as logic, metaphysics, ethics, biology, and more. He was Plato’s student and later became Alexander the Great’s tutor.

Aristotle’s philosophies on work intertwine with his ethical and political thought. Central to his ideas is the concept of ergon, often translated as function or task, which he believed is essential to understanding the purpose and nature of things.

For Aristotle, the ergon is a being’s characteristic activity or function that distinguishes it from others, and ergon fulfillment is the highest good. In the context of work, he saw it as more than a means of survival or a way to earn a living. He believed that work is an essential part of a fulfilling life, as it allows individuals to fulfill their ergon and contribute to the common good of society.

As freelancers, we often forget to enjoy the process of work. We chase the highs and bypass the pleasure of doing our jobs. I hope this quote reminds you to find happiness by taking the time to do the projects you love.
