How has technology changed your job?

Technology is all around us, bringing about some positive and negative changes in its wake. You are reading this blog post on a device connected to the internet, which is evidence enough of how the internet affects how we communicate in the 21st century. You cannot escape the clutches of technology, whichever part of the world you may currently be in.

This post talks about my views on how technology has changed my job from having a regular job to a freelance one.

How I Started Freelancing

In 2006, I found myself in my second year of Fine Arts studies, driven by a desire for additional income to fuel my passion for video games. Armed with only an external storage device and my knack for writing, I embarked on a journey to countless internet cafes, where I sought to earn a few dollars through Odesk (now Upwork).

However, despite my best efforts, the limitations of the Philippine internet infrastructure posed a significant challenge. Unlike other countries where online freelancing was more lucrative, I occasionally resort to local full-time jobs to make ends meet.

The struggle was real, but I was determined to pursue my passion and earn a living through my skills despite lacking financial and moral support. Freelancing was akin to unemployment at the time, so I had to brave through many statements about my inability to keep a job and others.

The 2020 pandemic brought a better understanding of remote work and freelancing, so the lockdown put me in my element, and I thrived.

How has technology changed your job?

The prompt asks how technology has changed my job, but the technology started my freelance career 18 years ago. As mentioned, I relied on external storage and internet cafes to fulfill my client orders. I barely made a profit because I did not have my laptop or computer.

Several years later, I am better positioned to succeed and want to guide others in their freelance journeys.

These are the positive and negative impacts of technology on freelancing:

Increased Accessibility

Technology has broken down geographical barriers, allowing freelancers to work from anywhere with an internet connection. Remote or underprivileged individuals can access global opportunities if they know where to look.

Technology has allowed me to access better opportunities than those in Cebu. I learned about Odesk freelancing from a half-American classmate. I used to subcontract some of her extra workload but eventually pivoted to my projects after a few months. In 2006, writers only earned ₱6,000 (~$171.42) to ₱10,000 (~$285.71) monthly, and local jobs had around the same rate.

Enhanced Flexibility

Thanks to various technological tools and platforms, freelancers now have the freedom to choose working hours and projects, leading to a better work-life balance. We can also easily communicate with clients, collaborate with team members, and manage their workload efficiently.

Technology allowed me to work flexibly on my computer, phone, or laptop. I could travel to other countries while still doing my tasks.

Diverse Job Opportunities

The digital revolution has created many job opportunities in specialized fields like digital marketing, graphic design, and programming. Freelancers can now explore niche markets that were previously inaccessible, expanding their horizons and boosting their earning potential.

Technology enabled me to get jobs I would have otherwise been unable to access independently.

Skill Development

Technology has democratized learning, offering freelancers access to various online resources for skill development. You can learn anything online, meaning anyone can start freelancing from scratch.

Technology provided the avenue to enhance my skills and stay competitive through online courses, tutorials, and webinars.

Global Reach

Thanks to technology, freelancers can now connect with clients and collaborators from around the globe. This reach has expanded their client base and exposed them to diverse cultures and perspectives, enriching their professional experience.

On that note, let’s talk about technology’s negative impact.

Increased Competition

The aforementioned positive effects of technology have also contributed to its detriment. The ease of entry into freelancing has led to a highly competitive market, making it challenging for freelancers to stand out—increased competition results in lower rates and inconsistent income.

Digital Fatigue

Constant connectivity and the pressure to always be available can lead to digital fatigue. Freelancers may find it challenging to switch off from work, which can lead to burnout, mental problems, and decreased productivity.

A video went viral on Facebook, featuring freelancers bringing their laptops to the club. I believe that it represents an adverse effect of technology. Bringing your work laptop to leisure settings is a disservice to both activities. You can work and only partially enjoy your night out.

Dependency on Technology

Freelancers rely heavily on technology, making them vulnerable to technical issues such as internet outages or hardware failures. These disruptions can hinder their workflow and result in lost income. The Philippines often suffers from internet outages.

Technology and Freelancing

Technology has significantly improved freelancing, offering numerous benefits and opportunities. However, it has also posed challenges that freelancers should navigate. Despite these challenges, my experiences taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of seizing opportunities wherever they arise. These experiences shaped me into the freelancer I am today, reminding me that success is not always immediate but results from continuous effort and unwavering determination.
